Somatic Yoga

A cathartic exhale for your whole-being.

Join me to move, breathe, flow and connect more deeply to yourself and others.

There is no wrong way to do yoga here. You get to decide how you flow on your mat. Or, how to hang out in child’s pose for as long as your body needs. Whether you’re completely new to mindful movement, or a seasoned yogi, this class will teach you how to move based on your own intuition.

What does Somatic Yoga look like?

Somatic Yoga is different than other types of yoga.

It focuses less on mastering poses, following a specific sequence, or having perfect alignment. Instead, the goal is to help you rebuild your brain-body connection by feeling into the subtle sensations, tensions and emotions that live inside your physical body.

We all make a habit of disconnecting from our bodies as a way to navigate the complex and busy world we live in. But the more we do, the more we get stuck in that survival state. Somatic Yoga invites in ease, peace, and a cathartic exhale for your whole-being.

Class Testimonials

Although I often find it challenging to share in a group setting with people I don’t know well, Alissa creates a supportive environment that makes it easier. The diverse backgrounds of the people within the class contribute to a sense of unity through the sharing process.

In my view, this class is profoundly healing. If I could attend weekly, I believe it would be more beneficial than any therapy I’ve experienced and I’ve done a lot of different kinds

We all make a habit of disconnecting from our bodies as a way to navigate the complex and busy world we live in.

We don't eat when we’re hungry or drink when we’re thirsty. We repress our sadness and swallow the lump in our throat. We subdue our inner rage and extinguish the fire in our chest. We ignore our natural rhythm for sleep and waking up. We try to change how we look, move and feel so it better supports what we think we need.

And each time we do this, each time our brain overrides the needs of the body, the body becomes quieter. Until suddenly, we can barely decipher what it’s saying.

We’ve severed the connection. What our body wants to communicate doesn’t reach our conscious mind.. and so it starts wreaking havoc on our nervous system instead.

Is your body asking for you to listen to it?

Have you been:

  • Feeling irritable and impatient-- often towards those closest to you

  • Becoming overstimulated and maxed out more easily

  • Zoning out and losing track of time because you’ve disconnected from the moment

  • Feeling the need/desire to push away from relationships because they feel too effortful

  • Struggling to make decisions - even something as simple as deciding what to eat feels stressful

  • Pushing through hard circumstances in life without pause, and then collapsing and having nothing else to give

  • Experiencing frequent aches, tension, sleep issues, GI issues, fatigue, or heart palpitations

  • Feeling on edge, anxious, jittery, or hyper-vigilant

Somatic Yoga allows you to re-learn the language of your body-- to give it a voice and space to be heard again.. so that you can begin listening and supporting what it needs.

But new things can be scary, so let me ease your mind.

  • After I share the class theme and my own feelings about it, I ask everyone to go around and share their name, what feels exciting about exploring the class theme on and off their mats, and what feels intimidating about it. You can choose to share as much or as little as you like when it’s your turn.

I'l also say that I intentionally create a very safe space for sharing. You might realize you feel more comfortable sharing than you thought.

You also have agency in simply asking to be passed over if you don’t feel ready to share. That is fully welcomed and honored in our space.

  • Somatic yoga is perfect for a beginner. There is no wrong-way to do yoga here. I teach everyone how to adjust their practice based on the needs of their own unique bodies. No one is doing the same pose once we begin our practice and you are welcomed to stretch on your back for the whole class.

  • Since this is an open-ended class, we have new students joining us each week.

  • Average donations tend to be in the $10-$20 range.

Yes please! This helps me pre-set up the space and also ensure we don’t exceed 10 students.

  • A journal, pen, water bottle, and mat.
